Listening to watery ecosystems in Turkey

Grégoire and I were invited to a wedding in Turkey this summer. We took this opportunity to drop our microphones into the water of the Egea sea.

Grégoire had received some new hydrophones, using the Gladys model.

As we were with the family, we didn’t have as many occasions to record as we wanted to but the first time we could drop the hydrophones into the sea, here is what we heard:

We asked a marine engineer to identify this sound and it could be a shrimp swarm. What do you think?


During this trip, we wanted to get into a ‘stork’ village, with the hope to observe (and hear!) storks in their nest. We knew it was really late for this but in a little village in the area of Manyas’lake, we observed one couple.

It was really hot that day so we decided to rather focus on watery recordings. We put our hydrophones under the sun into the lake and this is what we heard :
